Everything You Need to Know About AARP Plan F

aarp plan fPlan F, commonly known as the “Cadillac” plan among Medicare supplement plans, is a popular choice for many aging seniors because it provides top-tier coverage for all Medicare-related services.

What’s Covered by Medicare Supplement Plan F?

Many procedures, diagnostic tests and everyday doctor visits are covered by Medicare Supplement Plan F. As long as Medicare approves of the treatment or service that you have done, you can expect Medicare to pay their part. Any remaining amount is then paid by your Medicare Supplement F plan.

However, it’s worth noting that if the treatment isn’t covered by Medicare, your supplement plan will also not cover it.

What’s the Difference Between AARP Plan F and Other Medicare Supplement Plans?

AARP UnitedHealthcare Medicare Plan F covers the same things as other Medicare Plan F Supplement plans. Other types of supplemental Medicare coverage cover different things. You’ll want to choose the Medicare supplement plan that provides you with the best balance of coverage and cost. It can be a challenge, but quotes are available online and over the phone to help you best decide the choice that’s right for you.

Generally speaking, your primary care physician will be able to tell you if the tests they recommend are or are not covered by Medicare. Where Plan F steps in is to help with doctor visits for injuries and illnesses. Your Part B Medicare Plan pays 80% while your plan F supplement helps take care of excess charges as well as the deductible.

There are many other Part B expenses that Plan F can pay the 20% for, including mental health, home health care and chiropractic care. There are caps on certain things such as physical therapy sessions, but you can rest assured that if Medicare approves the claim, your Plan F supplemental Medicare plan will cover it.

Other Frequently Asked Questions Regarding AARP Plan F

Does AARP UnitedHealthcare Plan F Cover Doctors Visits?

Preventative care, including annual physicals, imaging exams like colonoscopies and mammograms, well-woman exams and vaccines are all covered 100% through your Medicare Part B plan. Part B also includes coverage for screenings for things like diabetes, cardiovascular conditions and bone density scans.

Some doctors charge excess charges, such as a 15% excess beyond what Medicare will cover. You’ll be glad to know that your Plan F Medigap plan takes care of this excess, so you can rest easy, avoiding any unpleasant financial “surprises” from your doctor’s bill.

Does AARP Plan F Cover Hospital Stays?

There are many different inpatient hospital services that are covered by Medicare. Things like skilled nursing, blood transfusions and home health care services are covered by Medicare Part A plans. Part B covers some other expenses such as ambulance rides, injections administered in hospital settings (such as chemotherapy), diagnostic services and surgeries.

Ordinarily, you would have to pay your share of these services. Medicare only pays 80%. Plan F covers your entire share, meaning you pay nothing for these services. It takes care of the hospital deductible (up to $1,340 in 2018) and your 20% coinsurance as well as a year of additional hospital coverage after Medicare’s own coverage runs out.

Is There Anything AARP Plan F Doesn’t Cover?

With so much being covered by Medigap Plan F, you may wonder, is there anything an AARP Plan F doesn’t cover? In a nutshell, Medicare decides what Plan F will cover, which makes it easy to determine what isn’t covered by Medicare. This includes things like homeopathic treatments (acupuncture, acupressure), vision care and eyeglasses dental care/dentures, hearing aids, cosmetic surgery and prescription drugs to name a few.

Other items that Plan F doesn’t cover include custodial care, should you need help with daily tasks like eating, dressing or bathing.

As you may have already guessed, Medicare does not cover expenses for emergency healthcare in foreign countries. What you may not know, however, is that Plan F covers up to $50,000 of emergency travel health care.
